Thanksgiving Pumpkin Surprise

November 5th, 2015 by Susan Lopez

Thanksgiving Pumpkin Surprise

Easy change from Pumpkin Pie!

This is another dessert that our guests really love at Brenham House Bed and Breakfast.  It serves 12 and is a make ahead dessert and I have substituted it for standard Thanksgiving Pumpkin Pie.  It has a creamy center with a crumble top in place of the pie dough.  It feeds more people and carries easier if you have to travel with the dish.

Thanksgiving Pumpkin Surprise

1-15oz. Pumpkin (not pie filing)

3 eggs

1 c. sugar

1- 8oz. can evaporated milk

4 tsp. pumpkin pie spice

1 yellow cake mix ( I have used spice cake as well)

1/2 c. butter, melted

1-1/2 c. pecans chopped (sometimes add chopped coconut, too)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Mix in a bowl the pumpkin, eggs, sugar, milk, and spices.  Pour in a greased 13×9 baking dish.  Sprinkle dry cake mix on top.  Drizzle the melted butter over the top.  Add the nuts and coconut.  This can be placed in the refrigerator for the next day or just pop in the oven for 45 minutes.  If you want to refrigerate it make sure you let it sit out before putting it in the oven so the cooking time will be the same.

Cool, cut and serve.  Also good cold!

Royal Doulton Bunnykins

April 4th, 2015 by Susan Lopez

I am the innkeeper of the Brenham House Bed and Breakfast.  I am all about the pretties on a table.  I have a passion for china, crystal and silver.  For some people a beautiful table is just a thing of the past.  It doesn’t have to be.  I find everyone loves a table set with linens that includes a beautiful table scape.  When it comes to my grandchildren, I really want a great table setting.  I want my grandchildren to have table manners and appreciate the effort it takes to use the finer things on a table.  Did you know that Royal Doulton Bunnykins were used by Princess Margaret and Princess Elizabeth, as a child?  The Royal Doulton Bunnykins pattern was introduced in 1934.  Royal Doulton is an English company that produces tableware and collectables dating from 1815.  Royal Doulton had a general manager, in the 1930’s, who asked his daughter to create a child friendly design for a nursery series.  His daughter Barbara created drawings of bunnies, in almost every family situation.

These are pictures of my Royal Doulton Bunnykins, for my sweet Bunnykin!  These are just some of the many different patterns you will find when looking for your Bunnykins pattern.  Oh, the stories that can be created from the scenes on the dishes.  What fun a small child will have during mealtime, as you describe the different scenes.  Here is my sweet Bunnykin Jentry.

Royal Doulton Bunnykins

My Sweet Bunnykins

The Royal Doulton Bunnykins line was an instant success.  Rabbits were dressed in human clothes, in beautiful English country scenes.  Royal Doulton Bunnykins that are signed by Barbara Vernon are quite rare and highly expensive.  The Royal Doulton Bunnykins china makes a great gift for Chiristmas, birthdays, and Baptism gifts.  Twice a year Round Top, Texas has a hugh Antique Fair.  It takes place in the fall and again in the spring.  You may be able to find your Royal Doulton Bunnykins.  They are stamped on the bottom of the china.   Don’t forget the yard and garage sales.  One person’s junk may just be your treasure!

Toubin Park, Downtown Brenham

July 30th, 2013 by Susan Lopez

Toubin Park, downtown Brenham, Texas is a lovely pocket park.  Alleyways in the downtown have been turned into small parks, for you to enjoy.  As a tourist you can walk through the parks, sit down and rest, or use your computers or smart phones, with the city’s free wireless internet!  Toubin Park, downtown Brenham is located at 208 South Park Street, Brenham, Texas.  This park beautifully landscaped tells the early history of Brenham, Texas.  There you will see a State Archeological Landmark.  A large historic cistern was unearthed and put on display.  Large cisterns like the one displayed at Toubin Park, were built in the late 1800’s.  They were use to collect rain water and enable the towns people to put out fires, in downtown Brenham.  The cisterns ran under Brenham streets.  This just shows how progressive Brenham, Texas was for it’s time.  There are no other Texas cities known to have installed public cisterns or provide public services so early.

Toubin Park is a pocket park

Water cisterns were used to collect rain water in order to have to fight fires in the downtown area.

Beautiful Toubin Park in Brenham, Texas

Here you can read the history of Brenham, Texas.

Enjoy the wild west story of why the cisterns were built.  It is the tale of an early railroad, a rough boom town, and the colorful characters who shaped Washington County’s history.  The land was donated by Leon and Mimi Toubin to create Toubin Park, downtown Brenham.  This park allows people to walk through the park and learn about the burning of Brenham in 1866 and the large gun fight that led to the fire.  Learn how the Brenham citizens banded together to protect themselves and their properties from the oppressive Union Troops during Reconstruction.

Brenham’s Downtown Home Sweet Farm Market

July 14th, 2013 by Susan Lopez

Home Sweet Farm Market is an organic local farmer’s market, located at 306 Baylor, in downtown Brenham, Texas.  It is family owned and worked.  The owner, Brad, encourages other local farmers and gardeners to sell product, at the market as well.  What a treasure we have in our sweet town.  There is a parking lot at the corner of Baylor and Commerce for your convenience.  Bring your shopping bags or a basket to carry your food home.

I have talked with people who have driven in from Houston, just to shop at this market!  They recognize the importance of supporting the local farmers. All product is locally grown organic food.   Not like the food that has traveled miles and miles in a truck, then placed in storage before being stocked to sell, in the stores.  The Home Sweet farm Market is open every Wednesday and Sunday, in historic downtown Brenham, Texas.  Market hours are:

Wednesday 11am to 6pm

and on Sunday’s 11 am to 4 pm,

just in time for our guests, as they leave Brenham House to head home!

So much to choose from as the farmers are offering the best of the Brazos Valley.  There is a wide range of fresh veggies, watermelons, melons, to artisan cheeses, free range eggs, fresh award winning pickles, pickled wild grapes, green tomato ketchup, Serrano hot sauce, blackberry Worcestershire sauce, pickled green beans, and loquat chutney.  There are fresh cut flowers, Chappell Hill Lavender products, Independence Coffee, and local honey just to name some of the other items you will see.  Shop first and then plan your menus!  So different from planning menus and then buying the ingredients.  Of course you have to buy what is in season because that is the freshest and best tasting!

Seasonal events and farm tours are scheduled throughout the year celebrating local foods and our agricultural heritage from the Birth Place of Texas.  Make your plans to shop at the Home Sweet Farm Market any Wednesday or Sunday.  You will be surprised how much better the food is.

Brenham House Cherry Almond Scones

July 14th, 2013 by Susan Lopez

My husband and I love to bake!  One of the items we enjoy baking is our cherry almond scones which is one of our many varieties of scones we make for breakfast.  I feel like our guests really love them because they don’t have time to make them at home. Then, of course, there are all of those dreaded dishes you have to face when you are finished baking!  When our guests come to Brenham House it is a getaway for them.  We love to serve our guests great food and items they might not have everyday, at their own home!

Here is our signature recipe for our scones:
