Great News for Blue Bell Ice Cream Lovers

July 21st, 2017 by Susan Lopez

 Blue Bell Ice Cream

Blue Bell Ice Cream Brenham, Texas

Great news for Blue Bell Ice Cream lovers.  The new observation deck at the creameries just opened.  Tours had previously been cancelled.  Blue Bell has been working so hard to get your favorite flavors of ice cream distributed back into stores.  After a growing interest in the Blue Bell Ice Cream tours they have now opened the new observation deck.  It allows you to once again see the production and packaging of the ice cream, on the assembly line.  Also now you get to see the inside of a distribution truck. Check out how it is loaded for deliveries which go out to 19 states.

Did you know the Blue Bell workers rotate to different stations throughout the shift.  That way all of the workers learn each area and they don’t get bored. It probably cuts down on workers feeling like someone else got a better job!  Smart thinking on the management’s part.  Every time I have talked to a worker for Blue Bell I have only heard how much they like working for the company.  That is really good publicity for the company.  Of course I’m sure breaks are fun when it involves Blue Bell Ice Cream!

New season at Unity Theatre Unity Theatre, they will kick it off with Always Patsy Cline.

Unity Theatre Brenham Texas kicks off their 2015-2016 season with Always Patsy Cline.  Always Patsy Cline opens September 24 and run through October 11, 2015.  This play was created and originally directed by Ted Swindley.  The play is based on a true story of Patsy Cline’s life.  This season’s show will be directed by Jimmy F. Phillips and the musical director will be Steven Jones.

Always Patsy Cline is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer.  It is a show based on a true story about Patsy Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston, named Louise Seger.  Louise Seger befriended Patsy Cline in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961.  Patsy and Louise continued a correspondence until Patsy Cline’s death, in 1963.  Her death was a tragic airplane crash.  Patsy was only 30 years old at the time of her death.  The show’s title was inspired by Patsy’s letters to Louise Seger which were always signed Love Always Patsy Cline.  The show will be one you won’t want to miss because it will also include many of Patsy Cline’s unforgettable hits such as Crazy, IFall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Walking after Midnight.

Unity Theatre brings the highest quality in comedy, drama, and musicals.  The actors and actresses are professional performers coming from all over the country.  We are so privileged to have such big entertainment in such a charming small town!  Come and celebrate music legend Patsy Cline with this charming true story combining humor and heartache and 27 of her unforgettable hits.  Don’t miss out on Always Patsy Cline.  You can get tickets at Unity Theatre.

Antique Carousel

July 3rd, 2015 by Susan Lopez

Antique Carousel

Brenham’s Antique Carousel

The city of Brenham, has a wonderful antique carousel at Firemans’ Park.  Fireman’s Park is located at 910 North Park Street, in Brenham.  This carousel is the oldest carousel in Texas, according to the National Carousel Association!  This antique carousel was found in a field next to a railroad track, in 1932.  The horses were designed in the “county fair” style of carousel.  It is a sleek style with the saddles built into the horses.  They were carved to look like they are flyng with their manes and tails blown back.  All of the horses bear the running martingale, which confirms they were carved by Charles Dare sometime between 1867 and 1901.  This type of portable traveling carousel was built by Dare’s New York carousel company between 1867-1875.  We are so proud to have it now a fixture in our Fireman’s Park in Brenham, Texas.  Since the relocation, the antique carousel has been a staple for birthday parties and celebrations of all kinds.  In 2005 the antique carousel was closed due to wear and tear to the hobby horses.  After extensive renovation, the antique carousel was reopened in May of 2008.  The carousel is housed in a 16 sided covered building built by the WPA.  It is thought to be one of the few remaining like it in Texas.  The building was constructed in 1935. The carousel operates March 1st through October 31st.  This beautiful antique carousel is now open to the public on weekends for everyone to enjoy.

  • Saturdays:  11 a.m-4 p.m.
  • Sundays:   1 p.m.-4 p.m.

Each rider can enjoy rides for $1.00.  Only small children are allowed to ride the hobby horses, but there are benches for the parents and grandparents to ride as the children ride the hobby horses!

For tours or reservations please call 979 337-7250 or learn more about the history of the carousel by visiting:

Gluten Free Accommodations

June 10th, 2015 by Susan Lopez

We love operating the Brenham House Bed and Breakfast!  Both of us have over 20 years experience, in the food service industry.  As a result you learn to accommodate everyone.  We certainly don’t want to miss a booking because of a dietary restriction.  As a guest at the Brenham House Bed and Breakfast you are served a full gourmet breakfast each morning.  We have great gluten free accommodations, too.  We try to handle all food allergies as well.  Even if you are not celiac, but you are gluten sensitive we have you covered.  We can accommodate guests who are diabetic, low salt, lactose intolerant, allergic to nuts, or MSG, soy, cinnamon, ginger, grapefruit, and onion.  We have a large selection of recipes that we can use.  We only ask that you let us know, well in advance.  We plan our menus and do our grocery shopping before you arrive.  Some food preparation are also done before you arrive.  It is our practice to always ask, if you are booking by phone, if there are any dietary restrictions.  If you are booking online there is a space where you can type in anything you want to tell us.  Also, remember if you are booking for a group to please ask your friends if they have something they cannot eat, just in case you aren’t aware of any allergies.  Then let us know as soon as you find out.

This is just one sample menu of a gluten free accommodation.  We are very careful not to cross contaminate in our kitchen.  Gluten free accommodations are really very easy to handle, on our breakfasts.  We always use products that are MSG free, and always look for gluten that may be lurking in products.  All of the spices we use in our breakfasts are gluten free.  It is hard to find great places to dine when eating gluten free, but Brenham House has gluten free accommodations just for you!

2015 Spring Round Top Tx Antique Fair

March 9th, 2015 by Susan Lopez

2015 Spring Round Top Tx Antique Fair

2015 Spring Round Top Tx Antique Fair

This 2015 Spring Round Top Tx Antique Fair is close upon us!  There is so much you should know ahead of time.  These big shows take place in the fall and spring each year.  2015 Spring Round Top Tx Antique Fair occurs March 20-April 4, 2015.  Rooms can be hard to come by.  It is important to know that most bed and breakfasts require at least a 2 night minimum.  Also because this is a very important time of year for small properties you need to read the policies carefully because almost have a no cancellation policy.  At Brenham House Bed and Breakfast we allow you to sell your room to someone else, provided you call us and let us know who will be coming in your place.  Things happen and sometimes you just can’t make it and this allows you to give it or sell it to a friend.  Many serious Round Toppers book 6 months or more in advance for the shows.  Don’t get shut out, book ahead.  The big shows like Big Red Barn and Marburger’s really advertise for their shows.  That is when everyone thinks they need to come, but there is great shopping weeks before these shows which take place the last weekend.  I am here to tell you that there is a lot of shopping with less traffic and crowds if you come before the last weekend.  Many of the antique dealers, who stay with us, come two weekends before the last weekend.  They are looking for good buys for their own antique shops.  It has to be something they can increase the price and still be able to sell it and make a profit.  They grab beautiful things before the large crowds arrive.

2015 Spring Round Top Tx Antique Fair

Blue Hills in Round Top, Texas

Bring comfortable clothes that you can layer, depending on the weather, and great walking shoes.  Sunglasses, hat, jacket, camera phone, bottle water, snacks, Toilet paper, cash for easy transactions.  Most big places now take credit cards, but it costs the vendor to run cards and a better deal may be made if cash is offered.  Toilet paper for port o potties can be a treasure!  Phone cameras are great to document an item and location, if you want to come back later for it.  There are miles and miles of shopping and you can get confused easily.  2015 Spring Round Top Tx Antique Fair is usually cool weather with the possibility of rain.  Don’t wear you precious clothes and shoes that will be ruined after stomping through the fields.  Dress to have a great time!

There are places to eat as you move along the Round Top trail, but we serve a full three course breakfast at Brenham House Bed and breakfast and it will hold you until you get ready for dinner.  Most of our guests come back to Brenham to eat.  We have great restaurants in downtown Brenham.  In downtown there is Brenham Grill, Volare Itailian Restaurant, Yumms for sandwiches and pizza, Kay’s Cuisine for the Soul, Smitty’s, BT Longhorn Saloon, Subway, and K-Bob’s.   Brenham also has Appleby’s, Chili’s, Los Cabos, Taco Bell, Mc Donald’s, Bush’s Chicken, on Highway 290 at Brenham.  Plan ahead and book in advance!

Piece of My Heart Play

February 9th, 2015 by Susan Lopez

Piece of My Heart Play, written by Shirley Lauro, is a powerful drama.  It will be performed at Brenham’s Unity Theatre February 19- March 8, 2015.  Curtain times:  Thursday 7:30 pm, Friday and Saturday 8:00 pm, and Sunday 4:00 pm.

Piece of My Heart Play

Unity Theatre presents A Piece of My Heart

Piece of My Heart Play is based on a book by Keith Walker.  This play is based on true accounts of women who served in the Vietnam War.  The story is told in their own words.  The story follows six courageous women who went to Vietnam.  Four of the women were nurses, one was a intelligence officer, and one was a country western singer who was booked by an unscrupulous agent to entertain the troops.   Piece of My Heart Play portrays each of the women before, during and after their tour in Vietnam.  They come home to a war torn nation and their struggles to make sense of a war that irrevocably changed them.

Piece of My Heart Play has been recently names “The most enduring play on Vietnam in the nation,” by The Vietnam Veterans Association.  Piece of My Heart Play will be directed by Unity’s Executive Artistic Director, Kate Revnell-Smith.  It will featuring Actor’s Equity performer Ryan Schabach, local actor Jamie Ward, and Unity Veterans Jen Lucy Estrada, Bethany McCade, Robin Van Zandt, and newcomers to Unity Christine Saenz and Monique Holmes from Houston.

Ticket price for Piece of My Heart play is $27.00.  Book with us at Brenham House Bed and Breakfast and we will be glad to secure your tickets for you!  As a preferred lodging partner with Unity Theatre our guests will be able to enjoy a glass of wine in the Player’s Club before the performance and meet the actors after the performance.

Brenham House Bread Pudding

January 8th, 2015 by Susan Lopez

Brenham House Bread Pudding has been made in so many variations over the last seven years!  There really is no right or wrong way to make a bread pudding.  In the olden days bread pudding was a sweet way to use up stale bread.  Throwing out food was just not done.  The funny thing is that the stale bread really does soak up the yummy milk and egg mixture well.  Creativity is where the fun begins!  You can add fruit, chocolate chips, or nuts to your bread pudding.  Brown sugar topping, or cream cheese are also great add on choices.  Then there are the wonderful toppings to add to your bread pudding after it comes out of the oven.  White chocolate cream sauce, brandy or bourbon cream sauce, strawberry syrup or maple syrup or just powdered sugar sprinkled on top! The sky is the limit on the many combinations you can make.  But the recipe I really like and seem to make over and over, as a morning dessert for our guests, is this very simple Brenham House Bread Pudding recipe.

  •  Brenham House Bread Pudding ingredients:  1 loaf French bread, 3 eggs, 3 cups half and half, 1 tablespoon vanilla, 2 cups of sugar, 1/2 stick of butter, and 1 cup pecan pieces.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.  Spray a baking dish and set aside.  Cut the French bread into 10 cups of cubes and place in the baking dish.  In another bowl whisk together the eggs, cream, vanilla and sugar, cream.  Melt the butter and add to the egg mixture.  Then pour evenly over the bread.  Sprinkle the chopped pecan pieces across the top.  Place in the oven and bake for about one hour.

  • Brandy Cream Sauce ingredients:  one stick of butter, 1/2 cups sugar, 3/4 cup of half and half, and 1/4 cup of brandy.

In a pan, on the stove top, add butter and begin to melt.  Mix in the sugar well and then add the cream and brandy.  As the mixture starts to boil, whisk until the sugar is dissolved about 5 minutes.  Take off the heat and pour over the baked Brenham House Bread Pudding and enjoy!
